How 'Family Emergency' Scams Work

They often involve messages claiming to be from a relative in distress.

How the Scam Works

1. You receive a message from an unknown number.
2. The sender claims to be a family member.
3. They explain they are in trouble and need urgent help.
4. You are asked to send money quickly.

Common Variations

• “I’ve lost my phone” messages
• Requests via WhatsApp
• Claims of accidents or emergencies

Why They Are Effective

These scams rely on emotion. People want to help their loved ones quickly without questioning the situation.

How to Stay Safe

Verify the identity
Contact the person directly using a known number.

Do not act on urgency alone
Take time to confirm the situation.

Be cautious with new numbers
A change in contact details should always be verified.

Understanding emotional manipulation is key to avoiding these scams.
