How to Protect Yourself When Using QR Codes

However, they can also be used in scams.

How QR Code Scams Work

Scammers may:

• Replace legitimate QR codes with fraudulent ones
• Send QR codes via messages
• Use codes that direct to fake websites

Once scanned, you may be taken to a malicious page or prompted to enter sensitive information.

How to Stay Safe

Be cautious with unknown QR codes
Do not scan codes from untrusted sources.

Check the context
If a QR code appears out of place, treat it as suspicious.

Verify before interacting
Ensure the source is legitimate.

Avoid entering sensitive information after scanning
Especially if redirected to a website.

Why Awareness Matters

QR codes are convenient, but they remove visibility — you cannot see where they lead before scanning.

Stay in Control

Treat QR codes like links. If you would not click it, do not scan it.
